SEMINAR AND SYMPOSIUM
RESEARCH AND METHODOLOGY TRAINING WORKSHOP
BACKGROUND
The Nigerian Economic Society (NES) is 53 this year. Formed in 1957 by Nigerian Scholars in the United Kingdom, the NES has remained the premier professional body for Nigerian academic and professional economists and has consistently provided opportunities for economists, allied social scientists, private sector agents and policy makers to share ideas on cutting edge economic research and contemporary economic and social policy issues through its annual conferences, public lectures, one day seminars, special sessions on Teaching of Economics and, through its publications.
At the 50th Annual Conference, the NES recognized that academic and professional practice is increasingly confronted by three key challenges: weak understanding of the methodologies of economics; poor research skills, and grossly inadequate scholarly writing skills. After due presentations and deliberations, the NES resolved to address the three areas through training workshops. The overall objective of the training workshop is to provide academic and professional economists with opportunities to continually upgrade their know that and know-how and by so doing, upgrade the standard of economic training and professional practice.
The Research and Methodology Training Workshop is a first step in fulfilling the new mandate of the NES. The training workshop targets the twin problems of weak research capacity and weak understanding of economic methodology through a six-day intensive programme that employs participatory lectures, group and individual works and, computer training.
OBJECTIVES OF THE WORKSHOP
Participants are expected at the end of the workshop to have clearer understanding of economic methodology, improve their research skills and capacity to supervise research projects, acquire practical skills in E-views, SPSS, GAMS and EXCEL as well as improve capacity to articulate communication strategies for their research. The specific objectives of the workshop include to:
- acquaint participants with the diverse philosophical and methodological foundations of economics;
- train participants to acquire or deepen intellectual skills (capacity to analyze, systematize and evaluate);
- train participants to acquire or deepen research skills (capacity to formulate problems, choose appropriate methodologies, and conduct theoretical and empirical research);
- train participants to acquire capacity to effectively use E-views, SPSS, GAMS and Excel; and
- prepare participant for a more fruitful career in economics.
The training workshop is directed by Professor A. G. Garba of the Department of Economics, Ahmadu Bello University the Editor of the Nigerian Journal for Social and Economic Studies (NJESS) and the NES. The Modules will be facilitated by experienced teachers, researchers and bankers including Professor A. H. Ekpo, Dr K.S. Adeyemi and Dr N. I. Nwokoma.
